9. Central Festival Samui: shopping, cinema, bowling & VR under one roof
Central Festival describes itself as the island's biggest lifestyle shopping complex: three floors, around 90,000 square metres of retail space, a central location on the east coast between Chaweng Beach Road and Chaweng Lake, with three entrances in total. The cinema is still running, showing current blockbusters in English — out of respect, the royal anthem plays before the film starts and everyone stands. New since our last check: the same complex now also houses a bowling alley and a virtual reality gaming zone, making it easy to spend a whole rainy afternoon under one roof. As a newer alternative in Chaweng, the Haven Samui Community Mall also opened with a soft launch in late 2024.

8. 360 Sports Park: trampoline hall and climbing wall
The former indoor skydiving venue EasyFly near Chaweng Lake is reported permanently closed on TripAdvisor. As an active replacement for an adrenaline-filled rainy afternoon, we recommend 360 Sports Park in Bophut: a trampoline hall of around 510 square metres with several zones, a climbing wall up to 10 metres high with routes for different levels, plus a board game cafe with over 70 games for a calmer break.

7. Magic Alambic Rum Distillery: rum tasting in the south of the island
You can see local rum production for yourself at the Magic Alambic Rum Distillery near Bang Kao, also known as "La Rhumerie de Koh Samui". It was founded in 2003 by a French couple and has run under new ownership since 2014 — it still produces rum from sugar cane using traditional methods, and the rum has to mature for several months before it can be sold. Tastings are still offered, as is the chance to buy a bottle to take home.

6. Art Samui: 3D art museum in Choeng Mon
Another entertaining spot for a rainy day is the Art Samui 3D art museum in the Choeng Mon area near Chaweng. Around 65 painted 3D exhibits create an optical illusion that makes you feel like you're inside the picture — a good spot for family photos on a wet afternoon.

5. Watch a Muay Thai fight night
A Thai boxing match takes place inside a covered stadium hall, making it a solid pick when showers are rolling through outside. Fight nights usually run Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 9pm until just before midnight, with six to ten fights featuring international and local boxers — the strongest technical fight is usually saved for last.

4. Take a Thai cooking class
In a covered open-air kitchen with a sea view, you'll learn how to prepare original Thai dishes — choosing your own five favourites from several options. The four-hour class runs in small groups of up to ten people, so you're actually cooking at the wok yourself rather than just watching.

When it's only lightly raining, a beach bar hop is a great option: many bars have covered seating right by the water, plus music, friendly staff and the well-known "happy hour" drink specials.
