Riding a jet ski is on plenty of Thailand bucket lists — but beach rental has a reputation in Thailand that isn't entirely undeserved. Here's an honest look at prices, the well-known damage-claim problem, how to protect yourself, and why a guided safari is often the more relaxed option.

How much does a jet ski cost on Koh Samui?

For casual rental straight off the beach, prices generally range from 2,500 to 4,000 THB per hour, with 15-minute rides often going for 800 to 1,500 THB. Importantly, the price boards on the beach tend to be a starting point for negotiation rather than a fixed rate, and the actual amount depends heavily on the operator, the season and how well you haggle. Busy beaches like Chaweng have the most operators but also the most crowding; Lamai and the northern beaches around Bophut and Maenam have fewer operators but calmer water.

For a booked, guided jet ski safari with a guide and insurance, the product box further down shows today's price — usually higher than the cheapest beach rate, but fixed and not subject to haggling.

The well-known problem: damage claims at beach rentals

Thailand has a recurring, well-documented pattern with some independent beach jet ski operators: after your ride, the operator claims new damage occurred and demands a large sum, often between 10,000 and 50,000 THB. In many reported cases, the damage was already there or was concealed at handover. This doesn't apply to every operator and isn't a blanket accusation — but enough travellers report it that it's worth protecting yourself in advance.

How to protect yourself

  • Photos and video before you ride. Film and photograph the jet ski from every angle before setting off, including any existing scratches or dents.
  • Get everything in writing. Price, rental duration and what's included — ideally on a signed note, or as a photo of the agreement.
  • Never hand over your passport as a deposit. An ID card or a copy is usually enough; the original stays with you.
  • Choose a reputable operator. Rental outfits recommended by hotels or established tour operators have more to lose than an anonymous beach stand. See How to spot legitimate tour operators in Thailand.
  • Call the Tourist Police in a dispute (hotline 1155) rather than relying only on local police, and if you paid by card, check with your bank about a chargeback if needed.

Guided jet ski safaris as an alternative

If you'd rather avoid all of this from the start, book a guided safari with a fixed price, a guide and accident insurance instead of independent beach rental. On kohsamui.tours there are three lengths, from a short hour to a longer trip with a snorkelling stop:

Short and affordable — one hour, a good way to try it out:

Licence and rules

Formally, Thailand requires a boat operator's licence for motorised watercraft. In practice, this is generally not checked at tourist beach rentals on Koh Samui — a legal grey area worth knowing about, even if it rarely affects you day to day. On guided safaris, the guide usually handles navigation or rides along as your passenger anyway.

There's no reliable official figure for how far offshore you're allowed to go specifically on Koh Samui; for comparison, elsewhere in Thailand Pattaya applies a 200-metre minimum distance from the beach and Phuket around 500 metres. Whatever the exact figure, follow your operator's instructions and stay clear of marked swimming areas. On our guided safaris, the operator's own policy sets a minimum age of 18 for the driver and 8 for a passenger, and participation isn't recommended during pregnancy.

Safety

  • Always wear a life jacket, even if you're a strong swimmer.
  • Don't ride after drinking alcohol.
  • Mornings are usually calmer and less windy than afternoons.
  • Keep your distance from swimmers, other boats and the shoreline.
  • Skip risky manoeuvres like sharp turns or jumping your own wake.
