Koh Samui Sunset: The Best Spots to Watch It

Because the sun sets quickly and almost vertically this close to the equator, a Koh Samui sunset is always a short, intense show – and the island has some genuinely lovely places to watch it. Here's when the sun goes down, where to see it best, and which boat tour lets you watch it from the water.
What time is sunset on Koh Samui?
Koh Samui sits only about 9 degrees north of the equator, so sunset times vary only a little across the year. Roughly speaking, towards the end of the year, from around November to January, the sun sets between 5:55 and 6:20 p.m. From around May to July it's later, between 6:15 and 6:45 p.m. For planning purposes, a safe rule of thumb is anywhere between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m.
How quickly does it get dark?
Unlike in higher latitudes, there's barely any long dusk this close to the equator. After sunset it usually takes only about 20 to 30 minutes before it's properly dark – the sky moves quickly from orange to pink to deep blue, and then it's night. Don't cut it too close if you still have a walk back from the beach or a viewpoint ahead of you.
The best sunset spots
The island's popular beach towns, Chaweng and Lamai, face east – better for sunrise than sunset. For a sunset over the sea, head to the west or north coast instead.
The west coast: Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam and Nathon
Lipa Noi, on the island's west side, is one of Koh Samui's quietest and cleanest beaches, with a wide, open view of the horizon – ideal if you want to watch the sun go down with nothing but sea in the frame. Further south lies Taling Ngam on the south-west coast, where on a clear evening you can see the offshore islands (the so-called "Five Islands") silhouetted against the setting sun. Perched on the cliffs above Taling Ngam is the Air Bar at InterContinental Samui, one of the island's best-known panoramic sunset spots. Nathon, the ferry town on the west coast, is a working harbour by day; by evening the long wooden pier becomes a quiet stage for sunset over the strait toward the mainland.
Bophut and Fisherman's Village
Fisherman's Village in Bophut, on the north coast, faces north-north-west across the bay towards Koh Phangan. The old Sino-Thai wooden shophouses along the walking street are a shopping and dining strip by day; by early evening, the beach bars at the western end fill up. The best known is Coco Tam's, right on the sand, with beanbags and an open view of the water. Arrive around thirty minutes before sunset for a good spot, especially on Fridays.
Viewpoints and bars
Beyond the beaches themselves, an elevated spot is worth seeking out: cliffside bars like the Air Bar already mentioned give you a sweeping view along the coast. For a spontaneous evening with no booking needed, the beach bars on the west coast and in Bophut are the more reliable option, since most are open to walk-ins.
Watching the sunset from a boat
If you want to see the island from the water at the same time, book a tour timed to return right at dusk.

Practical tips
- Arrive at least 20 to 30 minutes before your expected sunset time to get a good spot.
- For beach bars with no reservations, get there early, especially on Fridays and weekends.
- During the rainy season, usually October to December, cloud cover can hide the sunset or boat trips can be cancelled. More on this in Koh Samui weather and the truth about the rainy season.
- Bring a torch or your phone's flashlight if you're walking back after dark — as above, it gets dark fast.
Frequently asked questions
Where can you watch the sunset on Koh Samui?

Roughly between 5:55 and 6:45 p.m., depending on the season — earlier towards the end of the year, later mid-year. The variation is small overall because of the proximity to the equator.
How quickly does it get dark in Thailand in the evening?
Usually about 20 to 30 minutes after sunset. Unlike in Europe, there's no long dusk — it gets dark comparatively fast.
