Koh Samui is Thailand's third-largest island, and there's a whole range of ways to reach it — from a direct flight to a combination of overnight bus and ferry. Which option suits you best mostly comes down to budget and how much time you have. This guide gives you the 2026 overview, with durations, price ranges and the key tips for each route.

Direct flight to Koh Samui

The most comfortable way is a direct flight to the island's own airport, Koh Samui Airport (USM). Built in 1989, it's still owned by Bangkok Airways — Thailand's only privately operated airport. In 2026, Samui has direct domestic connections from Bangkok (both airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang), Chiang Mai, Krabi and Phuket, mostly with Bangkok Airways. Internationally, there are direct flights to Hong Kong and Singapore (Bangkok Airways, plus Scoot on the same route) and to Kuala Lumpur with Berjaya Air. There is no direct flight to Koh Samui from Europe, North America, Australia or other overseas regions — you always fly into Bangkok first and take a connecting flight from there.

Because Bangkok Airways owns and runs the airport itself, and other carriers pay high landing fees to operate there, tickets to Koh Samui tend to be pricier than comparable domestic Thai routes. If you land at Nakhon Si Thammarat rather than Surat Thani, the onward journey uses the same Donsak ferries — a connecting bus first takes you from the city (or its airport) to Donsak pier. Night train or night bus plus ferry ("joint ticket")

If you have time to spare and want to save money, take the overnight train or overnight bus from Bangkok to the mainland, then continue by ferry. The State Railway of Thailand connects Bangkok and Surat Thani in around 11 to 13 hours; a 2nd-class sleeper berth costs roughly 530 to 830 THB, and a private 1st-class cabin around 1200 to 1600 THB. From Surat Thani station, a bus takes you onward to Donsak pier.

Alternatively, an overnight bus runs directly towards Donsak, typically departing Bangkok around 7 to 9pm. Rather than buying the bus or train ticket and the ferry ticket separately, it's more reliable to book a single through "joint ticket" (bus or train, minivan connection and ferry combined, available for example via 12Go or directly through Lomprayah): if one leg runs late, your onward connection is protected. These bus+ferry combined tickets cost around 600 to 1,000 THB in total, with a full journey time of roughly 10 to 14 hours — and you save a night's hotel stay in the process. Operators such as Songserm also sell through train+bus+ferry tickets, which cost noticeably more at around 1,280 to 1,980 THB because they include the train leg — whether that's worth it depends on whether the train ride itself appeals to you, or you'd rather just arrive as cheaply as possible.

From Phuket or Krabi

Already in Phuket or Krabi? You have two options. The faster one: Bangkok Airways flies direct from both Phuket and Krabi to Koh Samui. The cheaper one: bus or minivan via Surat Thani to Donsak pier, then onward by ferry — this combination takes roughly 6 to 10 hours and costs around 600 to 900 THB, depending on connections.

Self-drive and ferry

If you prefer to set your own pace, you can rent a car and drive to Surat Thani yourself. At Donsak pier, drive your car onto the Raja Ferry or Seatran ferry to Koh Samui (vehicles travel on these two routes, not on the Lomprayah catamaran).
