Once a month, 800 metres of sand turn into the loudest party in Thailand. Getting there is the easy part. Getting back at four in the morning is not — so that bit is sorted before you even leave.

Four in the morning is the hard part

Going over is easy. Boats run all evening, everyone is already buzzing, the beach does the rest.

Then the sky turns grey. The music thins out, the beach empties towards the pier, and a few thousand people want to cross back at once. The boats waiting there are not scheduled services — they leave when they're full, and «full» stretches a long way at that hour. Life jackets are not a given. The price is whatever the moment allows.

Book the round trip and none of that is your problem: you get picked up, you get across, and your seat home is reserved before you set off. You end the night walking onto a boat instead of bargaining for one.

The party follows the moon, on the beach at Haad Rin. If a date lands on a major Buddhist holy day it moves to the next night — alcohol sales stop nationwide on those days — so this list is solid but not carved in stone.

  1. Hotel pickupEvening, from your place on Koh Samui. Pickup is from accommodation only, never from the airport.
  2. To the pierShort drive to the north coast, nothing for you to arrange. Boats to the party leave from Bangrak and Maenam.
  3. AcrossRoughly half an hour to an hour on the water, depending on the boat and the pier.
  4. Haad Rin800 metres of sand on the south-eastern tip of Koh Phangan, and every bar along it running its own sound system. Until you have had enough.
  5. Back before sunriseYour seat is reserved — no queue, no haggling — and you are dropped at your hotel somewhere around sunrise.

We arrange the round trip and are your contact if anything changes; the boats and vehicles belong to the local partners who run them. We are not a ferry company and we don't sell ferry tickets — on any other night you'd use one of the regular services from Maenam, Bangrak or Nathon.

Three ways to get there

Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan — going over from Koh Samui

The Full Moon Party takes place on the beach at Haad Rin on Koh Phangan, once a month around the full moon, and draws somewhere between five and thirty thousand people depending on the season. It has run for decades, organised by the bars and clubs along the sand, and the 800-metre beach works as one open-air dance floor until sunrise. Ultraviolet body paint, a sound system every few dozen metres and buckets instead of glasses are part of the picture.

Most people come over from Koh Samui for the night rather than staying on Koh Phangan. The crossing takes roughly half an hour to an hour depending on the boat and the pier. The return is the part worth planning: the party ends at dawn, when several thousand people head for the boats at the same time.
